Stretching Myself

Little Henry

The title of this piece is Little Henry.  Most of my titles of subjects containing animals, birds or people end up with a name, sometimes named for people who have influenced my life.  It gives me a connection to that painting.  Sometimes when starting a painting a name will come to me immediately as in this painting.  I’ve loved the name Henry for years.   This is a sweet fledgling, having been given its life as summer begins and our season changes into freshness from a dormant winter here in Montana.  Henry needs to be a Little…for more than one reason.

While painting this, close to being finished, I texted a photo to my daughter to share my new art piece.  She commented, Henry, seems shy.  We exchanged text messages back and forth, having fun with the idea that Henry evolved from an earlier conversation.  I am an introvert at heart.  I do not like to speak in front of even a small group, never enjoyed being the center of attention.  Growing up quite shy.  Although, I’ve been able to overcome much of my severe shyness, I still do not like to give a speech or talk to a group.  Much of the turmoil is hidden within so I get feedback such as…oh, you’re not shy, I don’t see you as an introvert or don’t worry you’ll do fine talking, etc.  Really people!  Ugh!  As I want to throw up!

I’ve been invited recently to do a dual show with a talented artist friend.  This show would be in 2016, requiring a lot of finished works to display, an opening reception and, yep, I would have to talk.  Okay, this could hurt!  I visited with my daughter at length about this subject of talking in front of a crowd of interested art lovers.  What kind of questions would they ask, what would I possibly talk about, on and on.   I thought to myself, it is almost a full year away so I have time to prepare myself.

Suddenly, I was noticing all these signs, articles popping up on my facebook page about speaking and overcoming stage fright.  Good grief.  Into the studio I went as painting is like therapy for my soul.  When my daughter proclaimed that Henry looked shy it just shouted…wow…this is my example piece for telling people how emotional connection comes through in my art.  I saw that Henry did seem shy, having been birthed into this world.  It’s a bit scary.  Watching little fledglings bounce around trying to find their wings…that sounds kind of like me!  Henry needs to be Little Henry to give me courage and permission to know that it would be okay, small steps, little steps going forward.  Starting out little and growing.  I’m still not convinced that I can do this but suddenly having worked through some of those emotions with this painting of Little Henry I feel better.  Acknowledging it seemed to allow me to set it aside and not worry so much about it, at least momentarily.  Worry brings no benefit whatsoever in life.

If you are one that can speak openly with confidence, you are so admired by this little fledgling!

Zentangle Lessons

I’ve been busy since Christmas creating some ideas for the January Art Journaling Group.  I had previously asked the group if they would like to learn some zentangle or a new painting technique.  Most responded with a big vote for zentangle.  I thought I needed to brush up on some zentangle so have been trying to sketch something every day.  These are a few of what I’ve created thus far.  Not sure yet what I will be teaching for the upcoming art journaling class but I’m going to be ready!!

Raven

This is the process for creating the Raven painting.  This particular background I had finished last week, allowing some drying time and inspiration!  The raven is an important subject, not just to me but also my sister and my two daughters.  My father loved birds.  He especially enjoyed the raven or crow and felt there was a spiritual connection to him with these birds.  When he passed away,

suddenly we began experiencing encounters with ravens, really unusual behavior for these birds.  It still happens.  It is comforting but occasionally annoying as it feels like he is lecturing!  And it may just be our way of feeling like he is watching over us, kind of nice!  This painting will be heading out the door next week for sale but in the meantime, I’m going to sit back and enjoy it!

Spring Blossoms

copy bird 3

This sweet bird appears ready for spring perched on a blossoming branch.  Another painting in the bird series I am creating.  Done on a 6×6 stretched canvas with 2 inch finished sides.  No framing required.  The background has several layers of recycled papers.  I painted the first layer with a lighter blue.  The second is a color I like to call eggplant.  The bird and branch, sketched on lighter canvas paper and adhered to the canvas with gel medium.  Before painting the bird, some serious drying time required!  Usually I have a difficult time waiting to begin painting the subject!  I will use my hair dryer to speed the process.  This piece is outside my normal bright colors but I do like it.  Stretching myself a bit with my creativity, one of my intentions for 2014.

Have a great day, thanks for visiting my blog!

Snowing Men Here!

My third snowman for my winter collection.  I’m trying to put together some pieces for a show the weekend of October 19th.  A first for this particular venue so hoping for loads of traffic coming through!  No words placed on this snowmancopy yellow bird but that may change if suddenly that light bulb goes off in my head.  He seems happy with that bird on his head and a package waiting in the mail box!  Maybe no words are needed!  What do you think?

New Bird Painting!

IMG_6450This sweet little bird speaks to my heart and my dreams!  Done on a 12 X 12″ gallery wrapped canvas.  Acrylics, oil pastels, pen, ink, recycled papers and some textures added with random items…love using different items for texture…such as bubble wrap and shelf liner paper.  Thicker sides finished as well so no framing required .  I’m selling this piece for $60.00 plus shipping.

Details to buy this bird, please leave a comment for me…thank you!!

Soaring into the holidays!

IMG_5302Finally soared into some creative time in the studio.  This little, sweet friendly songbird will be heading to the gallery in the next few days.  I made the songbird  entirely of confetti from my stash of papers.  I’m in love with this little fellow who gave me the boost I needed.  I fell ill after my workshop at the beginning of December and had not been in my art studio for over two weeks.
